A Compact Submersible Winch for a Faired Towline

Abstract

The report documents the first two phases of the development of a research model of a submersible winch for high density storage of a faired towline. Phase I encompassed the determination of the technological feasibility of the concept through a preliminary design study and critical components investigation. Phase II included detail design, fabrication, assembly and checkout of the winch. Through land-based tests, operational characteristics of the mechanical elements and the adequacy of the drive system were demonstrated.
