The Feasibility of Statehood for New York City.

Abstract

The main question is whether or not statehood for New York City is a feasible concept. The problems faced by the most recent candidates for statehood, Hawaii and Alaska, were used as vehicles for surfacing some of the problems which New York City could expect to encounter in any attempt it makes for statehood. While few real similarities exist between the circumstances of New York City and those of Hawaii and Alaska, many of the arguments opposing statehood for Hawaii and Alaska could be applied to New York City's bid. Three aspects were investigated; the constitutional/legal, the fiscal, and the demographic. (Modified author abstract)
