The Preparation and Properties of D2-Carborane-Siloxanes.

Abstract

A flexible chemical synthesis of linear D2-carborane-siloxanes has been achieved which permits wide structural variations and high molecular weights (< or = 130,000). These materials have excellent mechanical and thermal-oxidative properties. Prepolymers with well-defined reactive end groups have been prepared. The feasibility of curing these materials through vinyl functionalities using conventional silicone rubber technology has been demonstrated. The use of proton nmr to monitor and help control the polymerization has been demonstrated and may have more general utility. (Modified author abstract)
