Approximate Method of Determining the Carrying Capacity of Ice Cover,
Abstract
The formula for calculating the conditions for safe travel over ice cover by single trucks and tractors, h = 10 square root of Q (where Q is the weight of the vehicle, tons; h is the thickness of the ice cover, cm), proposed by the author in 1939, has often been seriously questioned. In the construction of the Volgograd Power Station, when intensive use was made of ice passages across the Volga River, a team of research engineers conducted a highly interesting study of the comparison of different methods of calculating the carrying capacity of ice cover. The use of the formula for the calculation of allowable loads was confirmed for accuracy on the Volgograd construction project.
