Anticipated Closure Rates for a Proposed Drill Role, Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica.

Abstract

Closure rates are calculated for the proposed drill hole through the Ross Ice Shelf at 166 degrees W, 82 degrees 30 minutes S. Closure rates are calculated using the best experimental data on power law creep of polycrystalline ice. Without pressurization of the drill hole closure rates greater than 0.1 per day are estimated to occur at the bottom of the drill hole.
