A Comparative Study of the Effects of Succession in a Military and a Business Organization: A Critique and a Reanalysis,

Abstract

The general purpose is to reanalyze and evaluate one piece of research which needs to be placed in the proper perspective. This is a research effort conducted by Professor Oscar Grusky and described in an article entitled 'The Effects of Succession: A Comparative Study of Military and Business Organization'. (Grusky, 1964). The purposes here are: (1) to elaborate some of the substantive and methodological weaknesses in that study; (2) to develop alternative explanations and suggested hypotheses for the relationships between the variables which Grusky explored; (3) to develop and provide the rationale for several sets of suggested hypotheses which should be explored if we are to have confidence in our knowledge of these phenomena; and (4) to illustrate several pitfalls in research of this type which should be avoided if possible in future research efforts.
