Futurism

Abstract

The report reviews the state of futurism, or social forecasting, as a research technique. It gives a brief history of the field and a who is who of the main leaders active in it. The general procedures are described as well as the main centers which provide the pertinent services. Distinguishing between very formal approaches and the more discursive techniques, the emphasis is mainly on the latter ones. The present report is supplementary to other technical reports by the Columbia project as indicated in the preface.
