The Characteristics of Research in Different Academic Areas.

Abstract

The research activities of a university faculty are examined in terms of the clarity of standards, use of tools, and influence and collaboration on research. One hundred fifty-two faculty members were selected for the sample of those more likely than the rest to be involved in research, and according to seven criteria, from the 287 members who returned the subject questionnaire. Areas were classified according to three dimensions: 'hard-soft', 'applied-pure', and 'life-nonlife'. Differences obtained between hard and soft areas are interpreted using the notion of paradigmatic science. (Modified author abstract)
