The Optimum Receiver Structure and Performance of a Manchester-Coded FSK Data Link,

Abstract

SITY FUNCTIONS, PERFORMANCE(ENGINEERING)CODING, FREQUENCY SHIFT KEYING, *DATA LINKSA receiver structure is developed for detection of Manchester-coded (split-phase) FSK data. Such a signaling format is used for the sensor-relay platform link associated with Ground-Based Sensors, Project 8330. The receiver structure is optimum in the sense that it is the structure that minimizes the bit error rate for a given transmitted signal energy. The performance (BER) of the receiver is determined, and a comparison is made to the performance of the present receiver used in the Ground-Based Sensor System. It is shown that the optimum receiver requires 9.3-dB less signal energy to establish an equivalent BER. Conversely, for equal signal energy transmissions the optimum receiver would allow for adequate operation in a more severe jamming environment. (Author)
