A Study of the Chemiluminescence of Tetraaminoethylenes.

Abstract

Reaction rates and chemiluminescent and fluorescent spectra of six fully substituted tetraaminoethylenes were studied. The compounds were tetrakis-(N-pyrrolidinyl)ethylene, 1,1', 3,3'-tetramethyl Delta 2,2'-bi(imidazolidine), 1,1', 3,3'-tetraethyl-Delta 2,2'-bi(imidazolidine), 1,1', 3,3'-tetra-n-propyl-Delta 2,2'-bi(imidazolidine), 1,3'-diethyl-1', 3-dimethyl Delta 2,2'-bi(imidazolidine), and 1,1', 3,3'-tetramethyl-Delta 2,2'-bi(hexahydropyrimidine). Chemiluminescence emission wavelength are in each case identical to the fluorescence emission of the parent compound. A study was made of the effects of concentration of tetraaminoethylene, concentration of reacting oxygen, and concentration of a hydroxyl-containing catalyst (n-octanol) on the reaction rates of tetrakis(N-pyrrolidinyl)ethylene. An argument is presented relating the relative reaction rates of the six compounds to the degree of steric shielding of the ethylenic pi orbital. (Modified author abstract)
