Fabric of Kaolinite in Direct Shear Tests.

Abstract

Fabric data on kaolinite samples sheared in drained direct shear are obtained from carbowax impregnated samples that were examined by light microscopy and x-ray diffraction. Previous research in this laboratory has repeatedly demonstrated that when properly done the carbowax technique of sample preparation for fabric study does not disturb the fabric of the original wet clay sample. Fabric in the present context refers to the special arrangement of clay particles in a clay sample relative to a reference plane. Thin sections used for light microscopic examination were the XZ plane of the entire engineering sample. This technique permitted rapid location of the height of Z of the failure zone relative to the shear box separation and the variation in the failure zone along the shear direction X. The normal stress was applied in the Z direction. The thin section data also were used to locate the height regions that should be examined in detail by x-ray diffraction, thereby permitting a thorough delineation of the fabric of the sheared samples with a minimum of effort.
