Carbonized Polymer Coatings as Surface Treatments for Carbon Fibers.

Abstract

Carbonized polymeric coatings on the surface of intermediate and high modulus carbon fibers have been shown to increase the composite shear strength properties. These coatings were most effective when applied to fibers whose surface had previously been oxidized. Composites made with GYS 70 fibers had shear strengths of 6500 psi before treatment and 8900 psi after receiving the carbonized treatment. In the case of the HMS CARBON FIBER COMPOSITES, THE SHEAR STRENGTH INCREASED FROM 7600 PSI TO 11900 PSI DUE TO THE CARBONIZED POLYMER COATING. Concentration of the polymer treatment solutions effected final shear strength properties and the optimum concentration level was between 0.05 -0.50%. Intermediate carbonization temperatures (400 -800 C) IMPROVED SHEAR STRENGTHS BUT CARBONIZATION AT 1000 C produced the highest shear strength properties. (Author-PL)
