Raman Study of Molecular Motion in Liquid Phosphine.

Abstract

The polarized and depolarized Raman scattering spectra of the v1 (A1) band at 2306/cm in liquid phosphine were obtained as a function of temperature in the range from 142K to 297K. The depolarized linewidths were found to be at least an order of magnitude greater than the polarized widths at all temperatures studied. An analysis of the linewidths showed that the reorientational correlation times vary from approximately 0.1 psec to 0.2 psec, which is a factor of 10 to 50 shorter than the times found in other molecules of similar size. Scattering from the v4(E) band at 1110/cm was also measured and a comparison of the polarized and depolarized lineshapes afforded the opportunity to check the validity of using the rotational diffusional model to describe the reorientational behavior of this molecule.
