Effect of Hydrostatic Pressure on the Phase Transition Temperatures of a Nematic Liquid Crystal.

Abstract

The note reports the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the mesomorphic phase transition temperatures of p-(p-ethoxyphenylazo)-phenyl undecylenate (PPU), which exhibits a nematic range between 65 and 110C at one atmospheric pressure. Pressure up to approximately 25,000 psi (about 1,700 atms) was reached. The phase diagram of PPU is reported. Detection of the phase change was carried out by the Raman scattering technique.
