Radio Frequency Spectroscopy of Penning Ions: Measurement of Ion and Molecular Lifetimes.
Abstract
Collisions of an impurity species with optically oriented metastable helium atoms in a flowing afterglow yield ensembles of excited atomic and molecular ions. Conversation of both the longitudinal and transverse components of spin angular momentum has been demonstrated. These excited ions are then available for radiofrequency spectroscopy to yield radiative lifetimes, collisional mixing cross sections, and g-factors. Coherence transfer to the excited ions has been observed to the excited Penning ions. The technique exploited here can also be used to produce beams of polarized ions and electrons. Lifetime measurements of the rotational levels of OD have been measured as a function of rotational level and OD pressure. Preliminary observations of the decay of NH and NH(+) has also been accomplished. (Modified author abstract)
