Test and Evaluation of a System for Precise Time-Dissemination Using DME (VORTAC) Synchronization.
Abstract
The report covers the test and evaluation of an experimental system designed to provide precise time to aircraft via a DME (Distance Measuring equipment) (VORTAC) ground station modified to use a cesium-beam atomic clock for a time base. Data acquired from a flight test at NAFEC demonstrated the feasibility of this time-dissemination concept for application in time/frequency collision avoidance systems. The standard deviation of time-dissemination error was found to be 0.47 microseconds. DME one-way ranging capability was also demonstrated, wherein ranging accuracy of a modified airborne DME operated one-way averaged 0.1-nmi difference over that of an unmodified airborne DME in conventional two-way operation.
