Organizational Control in University Departments.

Abstract

The control structures of 37 academic departments of the University of Illinois were characterized in terms of the total amount of control in the department, and the distribution of control among tenured and nontenured faculty members. A consistent pattern of interaction effects of total control and distribution of control on department and individual outputs is discussed. In departments in which control was distributed in and hierarchical fashion a negative relationship is noted contrary to the the positive relationship typically found in other organizations.
