A Study of Differences in the Response of Germ-Free and Conventional Rats to Various Centrally Acting Drugs.
Abstract
The effects of certain central nervous system stimulants and depressants were investigated in the germ-free and conventional Sprague-Dawley rats. Less number of germ-free rats showed convulsions and lethal toxicity at 1, 1.5 and 2 mg/kg doses of strychnine and 40, 60 and 80 mg/kg doses of pentylenetetrazol. They also appeared to sleep longer than the conventional rats under 40 mg/kg of pentobarbital. These results thus indicate a trend in the difference in the susceptibility of the germ-free and conventional rats to these neurotropic drugs. (Author)
