Map Type Catalog for the Illinois Window,

Abstract

A standardized procedure has been developed to determine the synoptic map types which have occurred over a specified area (window). The map type catalog is a summarization of information relating to these map types for the Illinois window. (There is a catalog for each of the 14 windows which cover the United States). The catalog includes characteristics of the map types and listings of each map in the data base (25 years of surface pressure maps) along with its most similar map type. The map type catalog is primarily intended for use with other forecast aids that stratify weather or specific weather parameters by map type. Once the catalog is prepared, a firm foundation has been established for the development of additional operational forecast techniques. (Modified author abstract)
