Evaluation of Test Techniques for Advanced Composite Material.

Abstract

Tentative test methods are presented for evaluating the tension, flexure, and shear behavior of boron epoxy composites. These methods are based upon fairly extensive studies of the influence of specimen geometry and experimental techniques. Torsion rod tests were investigated to develop a method to measure modulus and strength on unidirectionally reinforced laminates. Coefficients of thermal expansion were measured on eight laminate configurations, and the results were compared to elementary laminate theories. Comparisons were made of data obtained using sandwich beam and cylinder experiments and coupon test specimens. A special cylinder test fixture was utilized wherein the ends of the thin walled tubes were restrained with a rubber bladder to minimize specimen end restraint effects. The report includes a discussion of the adequacy of the recommended test methods for other advanced composite systems. Also included in the report are complete materials and process specifications, composite machining techniques and nondestructive evaluation procedures used in this study. (Author, modified-PL)
