Escape Measures for Combat Helicopter Crews.

Abstract

The report describes different inflight escape concepts for helicopter crews and assesses them against nine major evaluation criteria. Six most promising escape concepts are identified and are evaluated on a comparative basis, with respect to the criteria. Recommendations are made for retrofittable, near-term and far-term solutions for crew escape from helicopters. The report also discusses the unique helicopter escape problems caused by the presence of the rotor and reviews techniques for rotor disposal. Helicopter accident data from four countires are presented in the report to indicate the flight conditions at the time of the emergencies. The report was prepared by a Working Group sponsored by th the Flight Mechanics Panel of AGARD.
