Lidar Measurement of Temperature: A New Approach.

Abstract

Lidar Measurement of Temperature: A New Approach.Technical rept.,Mason,James B. ;ECOM-5506DA-1-T-061102-B-53-A1-T-061102-B-53-A-19(*atmospheric temperature, measurement), optical radar, atmospheric sounding, absorption spectra, radar reflections, correlation techniquesremote sensing, measurement, temperature, tunable lasersIt is shown that the thermodynamic distribution of rotational states within a molecular absorption band of a gas can be probed by means of lidar differential absorption to obtain measurements of the gas temperature. A technique for exploiting this is described, and preliminary calculations indicate that although relatively weak absorptions are involved, sensitivities should be sufficient for profile measurements of temperature in the atmosphere.
