On Optical Alternatives to Microwave LOS Communication Systems.

Abstract

The feasibility of using systems operating in the infra-red and visible portions of the spectrum is examined as an alternative to wide-band microwave systems operating below 10 GHz. The atmospheric limitations for optical systems are described briefly as are the factors determining system reliability. It is concluded that, for the present, systems operating at optical frequencies are a less desirable alternative than those operating at 10 to 20 GHz, for wide-band long-haul communications.
