Coastal Bathymetric Plotting.

Abstract

The report summarizes the most recent research into the spatial temporal image merging technique for remote sensing of bathymetry in turbid coastal waters. Prior research had proved the method under average to optimum turbid water seeing conditions. This report discusses the degradation of the method under more severe environmental conditions and evaluates auxiliary methods for its improvement under difficult conditions. Factors such as sea state bottom reflectance variation and differing sediment loads are considered. Auxiliary methods for remote calibration include thermal IR scanning for surface current mapping, electronic removal of solar glitter patterns and spectral brightness variations in the sea, together with multiple color dye releases at their characteristic optical extinction depths to infer vertical current and hence sediment distribution. A final task is the preliminary evaluation of this bathymetry plotting method from ERTS-1 space imagery in a number of non-California, turbid coastal water types. (Modified author abstract)
