Isotopic Analysis of the Deep Staircase Structure in the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Abstract

An isotopic analysis (O18 and Tritium) was performed on water samples taken in the Tyrrhenian Sea where the 'staircase' type of structure occurs. Comparison between temperature-salinity characteristics and isotope concentration is reported. The observed decrease with depth of tritium concentration may indicate that the layers were formed at the same time, within the accuracy of the observations. The O18/O16 ratio and the delta O18 (SO4(--)) ratio showed insufficient change to characterise the layers. (Author)
