Methods of Using Satellite Information in Numerical Analysis and Weather Forecasting,

Abstract

Data on cloud cover distribution and the structure of cloud formations obtainable from weather satellites reflect a complex set of processes which transpire in the atmosphere. This circumstance can be used to determine the parameters of atmospheric conditions which satellites do not currently measure but which are extremely necessary for the purposes of numerical weather forecasting (pressure, wind). The research conducted along these lines has shown that, according to cloud cover data from weather satellites, the wind and geopotential fields can be established.
