The Derivation and Properties of Polymers Containing Quinoline Rings in a Chain,

Abstract

Through polycyclization of diisatinic acids with aromatic dike-tones, three polymers are obtained which contain 2-phenylcinchoninic acid as a repeating ring. In these polymers the repeating rings are connected by a simple bond, an oxygen atom or a methylene group. The structure of the polymers is determined by comparing their infrared and electronic spectra with the spectra of six model compounds synthesized for this purpose. The electronic spectra and the spectra of electronic paramagnetic resonance show the presence of conjugations in the length of the chain of all three polymers. The polymers are soluble in a water solution of alkali or triethylamine. From these solutions one can extract transparent, yellow-colored films. Upon being heated, the polymers are decarboxylized (above 320C) and return to polyphenylenequinolines.
