Abstract

The paper is aimed at the person who has no knowledge whatsoever of the computing and data processing field, but who has, or can expect to have, some connection with it. The lecture's purpose is to provide a general introduction to the field, to pin down its unique terminology and jargon, to identify the various types of computers and the scope of computational capabilities, and to provide some rules of thumb which can be applied in determining whether a need for such a capability exists or not.
