Particle Size Measurement by In-Line Holography.

Abstract

The report is concerned with particle sizing by means of holography which provides a method of reproducing images of small particles dispersed in a volume without the severe difficulty of the limited depth of field of conventional photography and without the disturbance to the sample of collection methods. The size and position of particles may be determined by this method and by extension to double exposure techniques the velocity may also be found. In-line Fraunhofer systems are shown to be especially suitable for particle diameters in the 5 to 500 micron range, provided the maximum recording distance (particle to hologram) does not exceed certain limits set by the smallest particles.
