Gyrocompasses in Mine Surveying,

Abstract

This is a handbook to introduce mine surveyors to the use of gyrocompass (gyrotheodolite) equipment. It contains a brief explanation of the principle of the gyroscope and of a pendulum type, meridian-tracking gyrocompass. Typical Soviet, Hungarian and East German mine surveying gyrocompasses are described in some detail, with instructions and examples of their use. There are brief discussions of the relative advantages and disadvantages of the various instruments. This handbook, together with the manufacturer's instructions, should be adequate to enable a mine surveyor with no previous experience of these instruments to use them in orienting underground surveys.
