Intercomputer Networks: An Overview and a Bibliography.

Abstract

The report examines the formation of networks of interconnected computer systems. Intercomputer networks are placed within the general framework of computer communication, and the various motivations for networking are discussed, together with the resulting network forms. Progress in several application areas is described, and a number of existing networks identified. Problems common to the development of any intercomputer network are discussed within chapters dealing separately with the communications, software, and management aspects. The published literature dealing with individual networks and specific problem areas is summarized at the end of each chapter, and drawn together in a comprehensive bibliography. (Author)
