ASTRO II Summary Report.

Abstract

The report summarizes progress toward the realization of an expandable balloon for load-carrying missions. A discussion of small- and medium-scale design simulations undertaken to demonstrate the feasibility of a new approach to high-altitude flight utilizing the contractor's elastomeric balloon film, MERFILM-U is presented. In addition, the report includes a qualitative treatment of an extensive equipment-improvement effort carried out by the contractor to satisfy the quantitative material needs of a full-scale version of the ASTRO concept and a progress report on envelope construction and payload engineering for the first of three such full-scale prototypes.
