Partially Connected Multiprocessor Systems: The Ring Configuration,
Abstract
The paper describes a new type of multiprocessor computer configuration, the Ring configuration. It provides an alternative way of using modular, off-the-shelf computer hardware such as main processors, core stores, input/output processors and disc controllers to produce flexible, high-integrity systems suitable for dedicated applications such as communications switching. The main objectives of the Ring configuration are to provide a system in which the connectivity of the hardware modules and the environment seen by the control software are independent of the overall system size, while retaining the basic advantages of modularity and multiprocessor operation, namely the ability to operate in a load-sharing mode which degrades gracefully under fault conditions.
