Seismometer Compensation for Broadband, Low-Level Acceleration Measurements,
Abstract
Precise measurements of geokinetic disturbances are required for the monitor and control of inertial instrument test platforms. Low-cost, compact seismometers were compensated to obtain representative performance. Using random-noise excitation of a bridge circuit, damping and electrical compensation values were determined which extend the useful bandwidth almost two decades below the seismometer natural frequency. Use of paired sensor and isolated-signal grounds enhance the signal-to-noise ratio. The resultant high-gain, low-noise circuit is described with particular attention to the shielding and grounding scheme, and general compensation applications. Frequency responses are shown for the seismometer and compensation networks. (Author)
