The Roll-Up of a Cylindrical Jet in a Cross Flow,

Abstract

The roll-up of the separation boundary between a parallel stream and a cylindrical jet which penetrates perpendicularly the parallel stream is investigated. The spacewise stationary problem is transformed into a nonstationary one and solutions are obtained using two different methods. In the first, valid only near the jet exit plane, the potential flow is solved by using a series expansion technique. A second method uses a number of single vortex lines to represent the jet boundary and is valid to a greater distance from the jet exit plane. Using these techniques the jet roll-up mechanism is investigated and numerical solutions are obtained. (Modified author abstract)
