Laser Related Study of Triply Ionized Promethium in LiYF4,

Abstract

SUM OF THE RELATIVE INTENSITIES OF THE OPTICAL TRANSITION BETWEEN THE QUINTUPLET F(1) and quintuplet I(5) multiplets for Pm(3+) in LiYF4 is even stronger than that computed by Krupke for Pm(3+) in YAG, in work favorably comparing possible laser action for Pm(3+) in YAG with that for Nd(3+) in YAG. In addition, it was found that almost all the Pm(147) nuclear radiation would be trapped in the crystal, and the optical properties of the crystal in the 0.94-micrometer wavelength region (where laser action might occur) might not be harmed. However, energy transfer between Pm(3+) and the impurity ions Sm(3+) and Nd(3+), which will also be in the crystal, is likely to quench any Pm(3+) fluorescence at about 0.94-micrometer and prevent the use of Pm(3+) as a laser ion.
