AMC Technology Assessment.

Abstract

The US Army Advanced Materiel Concepts Agency (AMCA) convened a three-day ad hoc working group (AHWG) 16-18 January 1973 to stimulate the development of an approach toward technology assessment (TA) within the US Army Materiel Command (AMC). The conclusions of the AHWG were considered by AMCA during the development of the plan for AMC TA, a responsibility assigned to AMCA. Eight recognized experts on TA lectured on various aspects of the evolving nature of the TA process. These lectures were followed by a simplified exercise in TA. The participants were then divided into panels to formulate the findings and conclusions of the AHWG. Among the conclusions were: a small, select staff group should be formed in HQ AMC to follow the development of TA techniques and to monitor and assist AMC TA efforts; TA techniques should be specifically adapted to the AMC environment in order to effectively respond to Congressional demands while simultaneously contributing to AMC R and D efforts; and criteria for selecting subjects for TA and assigning priorities should be further developed, based on the findings of the AHWG.
