Observations on Alcoholism in Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark,

Abstract

Alcohol studies and research are well organized and supported in Sweden and Finland largely because of governmental monopolies on the sale of alcohol with substantial financial returns to the state. In Norway and in Denmark the arrangement is looser and the support seems correspondingly less. The most original physiological research appears to be carried out in Uppsala and in Helsinski. Evidence is accumulating that alcohol dependence may well be a metabolic aberration and that the rat model may yet reflect the situation in man. (Modified author abstract)
