Venereal Diseases in Scandinavia,

Abstract

Venereal diseases in Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Norway are handled at the outpatient clinics by dermato-venereologists, most of whom are in the process of receiving their specialty training. They make an etiologic diagnosis, treat, report cases to social services for contact tracing, and follow up on the results of therapy. The clinical diagnosis of gonorrhoea, syphilis, chancroid, lymphogranuloma venereum and non-gonococcal urethritis is in their hands. They are assisted in this task by their own skill at interpreting methylene blue smears of exudates and their ability to detect Treponema pallidam in darkfield specimens. The cultures, antibiotic sensitivities and serology are done by highly skilled personnel in the State Serum Laboratories. Their own research is done in connection with services which they provide to hospitals, outpatient clinics and the central laboratory. Investigations at a basic level are scarce, although a few microbiology departments (Rijkshospital and Bergen University) are carrying on some excellent studies of the genus Neisseria.
