Preparation and Comparison of Technetium-99m Diphosphonate, Polyphosphate and Pyrophosphate Nuclear Bone Imaging Radiopharmaceuticals.

Abstract

Methods of compounding technetium-99m diphosphonate, technetium-99m polyphosphate, and technetium-99m pyrophosphate radiopharmaceutical kits are presented. Comparative characteristics of compounds and chemical, pharmaceutical and imaging factors and their effects are discussed. Due to consistency in nuclear image quality technetium-99m diphosphonate and technetium-99m pyrophosphate appear to be superior to technetium-99m polyphosphate for nuclear bone imaging. The choice of agent depends on the ability of the particular hospital pharmacy or nuclear medicine clinic to synthesize and assay the diphosphonate starting material. Safety aspects of the compounds are discussed. (Modified author abstract)
