Sound Speed Dispersion and Fluctuations in the Upper Ocean: Project BASS.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to study the relations between acoustic phase shifts and the fluctuating parameters of the near surface ocean. Time series data of the acoustic phase were used to calculate the dependence of the standard deviation and the mean value of the sound speed on frequency, range and depth. Simultaneous measurements were made of the fluctuating temperature, two components of particle velocity and standard acoustic velocimeter output. The research was conducted in Bass Strait, southeast of Victoria, Australia.
