Incoherent Optical Correlator for Active Sonar.

Abstract

The important design parameters for an incoherent optical correlator as applied to the active sonar problem are developed and discussed. An incoherent optical correlator assembly is presented which is capable of simultaneously correlating each of six different inputs with 150 different reference functions in real time. The results of system tests using a linear frequency-modulated input signal having a time-bandwidth product of 100 are reported. (The correlator is found to have a measured processing gain of 10 dB, which is in agreement with theoretical predictions.) The performance of a liquid-crystal device used as a real-time, updatable mask is found to equal that of photographic film. (Author)
