Acoustic Backscattering from Cylinders,

Abstract

Although the cylinder as an acoustical target for underwater applications has been investigated by many authors, there are still many areas left for investigation. The two topics chosen for pursual are (1) the computation and measurement of the steady state backscattered spectra as a function of the nondimensional frequency (ka) and (2) the computation and measurement of the actual shape of the returned echo. Power spectra were calculated for solid infinite aluminum, brass, Armco iron, and Lucite cylinders with ka ranging from O(+) to 52. Experimental measurements of the energy spectra (3<ka<28) for seven solid aluminum cylinders are presented and are in good agreement with the computational results. (Modified author abstract)
