Experimental Method of Classifying Soils According to the Extent to Which They Break up on Freezing (Methode Experimentale de Classment des Sols Selon leur Degre de Gelivite),

Abstract

A method is discussed for classifying soils, according to the extent they break up on freezing. This method, based upon a test of swelling upon freezing, permits relative classification of different soils with respect to one another according to a parameter which is the slope of the straight line curve of swelling as a function of the square root of the frost index. An experimental installation was developed for this purpose, with which relative classification of eight soils covering a wide range in their extent of breaking up on freezing was accomplished.
