Fungus Resistant XM205 Nonmetallic Cartridge Case,

Abstract

XM205 nonmetallic cartridge case materials were prepared with several concentrations of the fungicide zinc pyrithione. The fungicide was used either to treat kraft fibers of the case material formulation prior to the felting operation or was applied as an after-treatment by vacuum impregnation of formed sheets of the case material. The treated case materials were tested for fungus resistance. The results of the tests show that: (1) The control cartridge case material without fungicide, as well as the material containing only 0.09 percent fungicide, supported very heavy fungus growth. These materials were markedly affected by the fungal growth showing losses of about 30 percent in their tensile strength. (2) The addition of 0.3% of zinc pyrithione during manufacture of the case material prevented fungal damage. The biocidal effectiveness of the fungicide in the treated cartridge case material was not dimished when subjected to the leaching action of water for 7 days. (Author)
