The Potential Use of Tactical Microwave Radio (TMR) for Transmission of Weather Radar Data.
Abstract
TPS-41, AN/TRC-92, AN/TXQ-3, AN/GRC-144The report covers transmission of weather radar data by a Tactical Microwave Radio (TMR). The transmission of wideband analog data between a weather radar, such as AN/TPS-41, and a remote unit 32 km away are examined, with the emphasis on cost, simplicity, and the use of available militarized equipment. Additional data relevant to radar remoting are included in the Appendices. A 32 km line-of-sight link is calculated for Air Force-developed TMR equipment. Video bandwidth, antenna size, and transmitted power are varied to arrive at an optimum system. The TMR is suitable for remoting AN/TPS-41 weather radar data to 32 km, with 3 ft dish antennas mounted on 15 m masts. The reliability is 99.94%, or a maximum data loss of 26 minutes during the worst month. Data loss can be reduced to 13 minutes by reducing the video bandwidth to 2 MHz and employing selective filtering. (Author)
