Damage Interaction in Composites.
Abstract
The purpose of the experimental study was to investigate the effects of foreign object damage (FOD) on the bending fatigue characteristics of a composite material, unidirectional boron/aluminum-6061. Fatigue curves were generated for a control group and each of four levels of FOD. The composite was further characterized by static tensile, static bending, and nondestructive tests. All tests were carried out at room temperature. A similar damage and fatigue analysis was done for a titanium alloy, Ti-6Al-4V, to provide baseline data with which to compare the composite. It was concluded that the composite suffers more physical damage and a greater percentage reduction in fatigue strength than does Ti-6Al-4V for a given impact energy. (Modified author abstract)
