Evaluation of Granular Baralyme Carbon Dioxide Absorbent in Place of Shell Natron for Use with the Deep-Sea Helium-Oxygen Diving Outfit,

Abstract

Granular Baralyme was evaluated to determine its suitability for use as the chemical carbon dioxide absorbing agent for the deep-sea helium-oxygen apparatus. It was felt that Shell Natron, a caustic, should be superceded by a less hazardous material. It was concluded that Granular Baralyme performs satisfactorily in all respects. Accompanying specified alternations of helium-oxygen diving techniques are trivial. It is recommended that a BUSHIPS Instruction authorizing the use of Granular Baralyme be issued. (Author)
