Graphite Composites for Ocean Ordnance.

Abstract

A discussion is presented of an investigation of the effect of sodium hydroxide and epichlorohydrin impurities present in resin and on fiber surfaces. These impurities were chosen for study because they commonly occur in production materials. The results of the study indicate that these impurities significantly affect hydrolytic aging at levels which occur in commercial resins and fibers. It was recommended that composite destined for use in performance critical ordnance applications be subjected to determination of impurity levels that will affect long- term performance in a hydrospace environment, and a strict quality assurance program be established to monitor those impurity levels for all ocean ordnance applications. Also determined is the behavior of the elastic coefficients and strengths of high modular graphite fiber composites after exposure to an underwater environment. (Author, modified-PL)
