Preparation of Pure Epithelial Skin Cultures Intended for Coverage of Wound Surfaces.

Abstract

A method was developed for dispersing full thickness skin from different species (rat, rabbit, hamster and man) to cultivate epidermis cells. It was determined that CMRL 1415 supplemented with serum was the best of several media tested to promote the growth of epithelial cells. The effect on the growth of epithelial cells of different sera, fractions of it, and of whole embryo extract was shown. The effect of different concentrations of Vitamins A, E, K and D and of different concentrations of several amino acids was also studied. The inverse relation between age of the donor and cell yield was determined, confirming the results of other authors.
